Why all this talk about ethanol, bio-diesel and other fuels too weird to visulize? There is only one fuel that will fit all the uses to what it can be put and that is electricity. It is also the only one we cannot do without. So why the problems with nuculer power plants. We can run nearly everything with electricity and it can be sent anyplace in the country. If we want to harvest the wind, we will turn it into electricity. If we want to harvest the sun, we will still be turning it into electricity. A clean way to burn coal? Still will be electricity by the time it is used. Fuel cells will turn out electricity. Almost everything we do that requires fuel can be done with electricity. There are a few exceptions like jet aircraft and war machines and perhaps a few other massive machines that need the raw power of regular fuel and some of these might be able to be changed.
It seems foolish to me to continue to chase the old fuel technology when there is a new and better way. How about spending money improving the electric system and fuel cell technology with incentives, if money must be spent? There is no doubt that this country could adapt in a short time. Mass transit is not going to go anyplace, especially in mid America, until it becomes safer and more user friendly. I have big cities thirty to forty miles from me in three directions that I visit from time to time. Many folks comute that distance and more every day. An electric transit system that passed near by would be fine but how does one get to work from the transit system? A company shuttle? Somehow it just isn't the same thing as jumping in your automobile, listening to the radio and driving the distance. Then there are always those umkempt, rough looking fellows that hang around the station glaring at you.
Charging your electric at home, driving to work and back, is the way it will end up being. Encourage the oil companies to invest in solar plants. Encourage electric companies to harness the wind. Instead of sending billions to enemies of the United States, Insulate more. Get rid of these stupid local rules that restrict building sites to homes that exceed 1000 sq feet when one couple might only really want 500 square ft. Small eficient housing should be encouraged and not dis-couraged. Small homes have small fuel, electricity, and maintenance bills. Around here you cannot even finance, build or even find small homes. Everyone is encouraged to have 4000 square feet and a four car garage.
No, things will not change overnight and the Government policy will have to change to make it happen. I fear all this talk will do nothing except fool some into thinking something is being done, when is isn't. I hate most taxes but better taxes that are funneled into our own system than directed into some dictators hate machine.
